Frequently Asked
Questions
Answers to the most common questions about bariatric surgery, recovery, international patient logistics, and what to expect before and after your procedure.
Eligibility & Procedure
Bariatric surgery is generally recommended for adults with BMI ≥ 40, or BMI ≥ 35 with obesity-related conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnoea. Each case is assessed individually — contact us for a free preliminary evaluation.
Gastric sleeve removes approximately 75–80% of the stomach. Gastric bypass additionally reroutes the small intestine for a stronger malabsorptive effect and superior metabolic outcomes (especially for Type 2 diabetes). The right choice depends on your health profile and will be discussed during consultation.
Dr. Katar's Painless Gastric Sleeve protocol incorporates paragastric block anaesthesia, a no-drain no-NGT approach (where clinically appropriate), and an early mobilisation programme — significantly reducing post-operative pain and nausea compared to conventional sleeve gastrectomy.
The general guideline is BMI ≥ 40, or ≥ 35 with at least one obesity-related comorbidity. Some patients with BMI 30–35 and poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes may be considered for metabolic surgery. Individual assessment is required.
Recovery & Results
Gastric sleeve: 1–2 nights. Gastric bypass: 2–3 nights. Gastric balloon: day procedure or one overnight stay. These are approximate figures — your surgeon will advise based on your individual recovery.
Most desk-job workers return to work within 1–2 weeks. Those with physically demanding jobs should allow 3–4 weeks. Your surgeon will provide specific guidance based on your recovery.
Gastric sleeve: typically 60–70% of excess body weight within 12–18 months. Gastric bypass: 70–80% within 18 months. Results vary significantly based on adherence to dietary and lifestyle recommendations.
Yes. After bariatric surgery, lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation is essential. Your dietitian will prescribe a specific supplement protocol tailored to your procedure.
International Patients
