What is the Painless Gastric Sleeve?
The Painless Gastric Sleeve is an enhanced laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kağan Katar. Standard sleeve gastrectomy removes approximately 75–80% of the stomach laparoscopically. Dr. Katar adds three key elements: a paragastric block (regional anaesthetic technique applied around the stomach), a no-drain, no-nasogastric tube (NGT) protocol where clinically appropriate, and an early mobilisation programme. Together these dramatically reduce post-operative pain, nausea and vomiting, and shorten the hospital stay.
Key Benefits
- Significantly reduced post-operative pain compared to standard sleeve gastrectomy
- Minimised nausea and vomiting
- No drain and no nasogastric tube in eligible patients
- Earlier mobilisation and shorter hospital stay (typically 1–2 nights)
- Same weight loss outcomes as standard sleeve gastrectomy
- Available for both Turkish and international (health tourism) patients
Who is a Candidate?
Candidates for the Painless Gastric Sleeve are generally those who meet standard sleeve gastrectomy criteria: BMI ≥ 40 kg/m², or BMI ≥ 35 with obesity-related comorbidities such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnoea. Suitability is confirmed following consultation, blood tests and any required imaging.
What to Expect — Timeline for International Patients
Before travel: Initial online consultation with Dr. Katar's team, submission of medical records, pre-operative blood tests (can be completed locally). In Istanbul: 1–2 nights in hospital post-surgery plus a short recovery stay. After returning home: Remote follow-up appointments, dietary guidance and vitamin protocol coordinated with your home physician.
Frequently Asked Questions
Paragastric block pain control, a no-drain no-NGT protocol and early mobilisation are added to standard laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. The result is significantly less post-operative pain and nausea, and a more comfortable hospital stay.
Most international patients stay approximately 5–7 days in Istanbul — 1–2 nights in hospital followed by a short recovery period before flying home.
